People who are suffering from ulcerative proctitis can experience rectal pain, urgency to urinate and ineffective and painful urge to move ones bowels which is also known as tenusmus. 
2. Proctosigmoiditis: It involves inflammation of both rectum and sigmoid colon. Sigmoid colon is the short segment of the colon contiguous to rectum. Bloody diarrhea and cramps are common symptoms in proctosigmoiditis. 
3. Left –sided Colitis: This complication starts from the rectum and extends up to left colon. Some of the symptoms that people who usually suffer from left-sided colitis gets are diarrhea, abdominal cramps and weight loss. 
4. Pancolitis or universal Colitis: This inflammation affects the entire colon which constitutes right, left and traverse colon and rectum. People who are suffering from Pancolitis gets symptoms like fever, fatigue, night sweats, abdominal pain, bloody diarrhea and cramps.
5. Fulminant Colitis: It is one of the severe forms of pancolitis.People who are suffering from this complication gets extremely ill due to dehydration, abdominal pain, protacted bleeding diarrhea and can even experience shock.

Thought the complication waxes and vanes over the time but the inflammation do not extends to other part of the intestine. There is only small number of patients who develops extensive colitis at a later stage.

• Genetics: One of the main reasons of ulcerative colitis can be heredity. It has been observed that ulcerative colitis is prevalent in certain ethnic groups.Various researches have also predicted that the main reason of ulcerative colitis could be faulty gene that carries ulcerative colitis ailment.
• Immune System: Some scientist says that our immune system reacts to certain kind of germs or bacteria by causing inflammation in the colon.
• Environment: Unhealthy diet, air pollution, smoke and hygiene can be the contributing factors for ulcerative colitis.
• Intake of linoleic acid: High intake of linoleic acid is also considered one of the reasons of ulcerative colitis. Linoleic acid is mostly found in red meat, cooking oils and also margarine.
